Prototyping Services and Design Assistance

Rayco of Schenectady provides prototyping services and design assistance that help you get your products to market faster. Just send us your CAD file or part drawing and let us know what you need. From proof-of-concept prototypes to high-fidelity models, we have the in-house capabilities to turn your ideas into reality and advance your projects through custom part manufacturing and onto fabrication and assembly.

Metal Prototypes and Design for Manufacturing (DFM)

Prototyping is usually an iterative process. In addition to proving your design, it’s important to discover all of the details that affect the cost of your product. That’s especially important with expensive materials and labor-intensive assemblies. With Rayco’s design for manufacturing (DFM) assistance, you can design and develop parts that are less expensive to produce and easier to assemble.

Types of Prototyping

Rayco uses multi-axis CNC machiningabrasive water jet cutting, and metal finishing to create prototype parts quickly and efficiently. Whether you need a basic proof-of-concept model or a pre-production prototype that looks like and works like a final part, we have the metal prototyping services that you need. The table below describes types of prototypes that we can create for you.

Type Purpose
Proof-of-Concept
Evaluate scale and form.
Demonstrate some level of functionality.
Appearance (Looks-Like)
Visualize the product’s final appearance.
Functionality (Works-Like)
Validate the product’s form, fit, and function.
Pre-Production (Looks-Like and Works-Like)
Validate the product’s final appearance and utility.

Metal Prototyping CNC Prototype Machining

Metal prototyping includes water jet cutting, a process without any tooling to wait for and pay for. Yet CNC prototype machining is also ideal for metal prototype parts with tight tolerances and complex geometries. By creating highly-precise prototypes that are close as possible to the end product, CNC machining also supports your transition toward bridge production and, eventually, full production.

With CNC prototype machining, you can use the same materials for both prototyping and production.  That’s important if you need prototypes that provide the same strength, mechanical stability, tolerances, and other characteristics as you expect from production parts for demanding applications in the power generation, aerospace, defense, or medical industries.
